Mean Green

I don't profess to be a health nut. Nope not at all. I enjoy jelly beans, Munchies snack mix, and the occasional order of french fries. But I do understand nutrition and am conscious about what I eat.

The other day, I was not able to sleep due to incessant barking so I resorted to watching a documentary on Hulu, Fat Sick and Nearly Dead. Joe is the guy that is fat, sick, and nearly dead. He decides to fast from food and consume only juice that he has blended from fruit and vegetables for sixty days. He hopes that this drastic change in his eating habits will heal his body and help him become more healthy. I won't spoil the ending, but perhaps, you can guess what happened.

I don't know much about the science behind his illness or why he achieved the results that he did. However, I admire anyone that takes responsibility for their health, instead of relying on medications and surgeries.

Kb caught the last twenty minutes of the documentary and was ready to swear off food, purchase a fancy juicer, and consume blended kale from here on out.

Whoa.

We balance each other out, ya see. He gets all excited and jumps in with two feet and total abandon. I am skeptical, restrained, and prefer to think things through before making the jump. So we compromise.

We decided to make a green smoothie and try it out for one meal. No commitment, just an experiment.

I chose this recipe, chopped it all up, and tossed it in the blender.

Holy toledo. At this moment, I was feeling rather intimidated by this is pile of vegetables (and fruit). Now, I have this resolution to eat more green stuff, but this is quite possibly ridiculous.

It came out of the blender looking a little more manageable.

I'm proud to say, I successfully drank it all. I had to drink it slowly and with a straw, but it really didn't taste too bad... this coming from a rookie veggie eater with a strong gag reflex. I even drank the leftovers for breakfast the next day.

We aren't shaking things up too much over here. This is not going to be our every day meal plan. But I could entertain the idea of a three to five day cleanse or a green drink for breakfast during the week.

We'll see.
