366 Days and a Lie

Kb and I made it one year and one day. Woot Woot!

We had to modify the tradition of eating the top of the wedding cake that has been chilling in the freezer all year. We started it off right. After the wedding, my mom took the top of our cake and put it in the freezer at our in-between-house. My mom's friend, Elta, was down South so we stayed at her house while we were working on the house we now call home. When we moved out of the in-between-house, the cake did not move with us. Elta was out of town for quite some time after we moved out, and that's why no one noticed when her electricity went out, until it was too late. My mom found our rotten cake in the lukewarm freezer.

True to form, my mom does not disappoint. She ordered up a new cake from neighbor Pam, who made our original wedding cake, for us to enjoy on our anniversary. Not only that, my mom also got me a Dairy Queen ice cream cake. It's pretty widely known that I don't care for regular cake, but I do very much enjoy ice cream cake.

Oh my goodness. Yum.

On the tails of this cake-filled celebration, I caught Kb in a lie.

It was a lie of omission.

The first lie he has ever told me.

This morning, I found a box of Oatmeal Creme Pies in the closet. A jumbo box.

When Kb got home, I asked him about it. He bought them after work one day with his fun money. Which is fine. There's nothing wrong with that. But he felt like he had to hide them. So I wouldn't know? So I wouldn't eat them, too?

Apparently, I need to adjust the grocery list.

Nobody talks about it, but food can be an issue between families. I remember growing up, I would get frustrated when my dad would walk by and grab something off my plate.  Whenever the sound of opening a snack food would be heard, people would be drawn to the kitchen. The crinkling of a bag of chips was an alarm announcing the perpetrator of a junk food crime.

Food can incite guilt, joy, shame.

I don't want us to feel as though we have to consume junk food in secret in order to uphold the facade of healthy eating. Food should be something that's celebrated and enjoyed. Let's be real. I overeat sometimes. I love candy. And I've gone for a run twice in the last month.

Food is good. Let's not over think it. Junk food is fun now and then, but our bodies crave what's healthy. Let's stick with that.
